The idea to buy a refurbished phone or used or second-hand device may be a turn off to some as their perception of such devices are usually old, outdated and defective. This is, however not the case with refurbished devices.
Refurbished devices may actually be devices that are brand new and barely used, such as the iPhone 11, an Apple flagship device, released in late 2019. Therefore, buying refurbished might actually net you a better deal than brand new, without sacrificing on quality and functionality.
Refurbished vs. Used
A common query we get on a day-to-day basis is "what is the difference between refurbished and used/second-hand?", along with the common misconception of a used phone being the same as a refurbished one. However, this isn't the case!
A refurbished phone is a phone that has been professionally reconditioned. In our case and for all our devices, we work with our refurbishing partners to check 40+ crucial components and functions before we list the device for sale. Our devices are also scruntinised for cosmetic defects and damages.
Did we mention all our device come with warranty? Just for that extra peace of mind. ;)
On the contrary, used and second-hand devices are sold "as is". This means that these devices do not go through a thorough reconditioning process, and do not come with any extra warranty. Since used devices are not professionally checked, they might have undetected problems that may affect functionality.
A Good Deal
Who does not love a good deal? The main benefit of purchasing a used or refurbished device is price.
Generally, used devices are cheaper than refurbished ones. However, used devices do not come with extra warranty. The manufacturer warranty period of used devices might also have been expired or void. Thus, you will end up taking more risk by purchasing a used device.
You are also (not usually) allowed to return a used device as most used device sales are peer-to-peer. On the off chance you get struck by a little bit of buyer's remorse, remember that all our refurbished devices come with a 7 day free return policy ;)
New Does Not Always Mean Better
Every year, major phone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung release a new flagship phone. We expect these new releases to be better than the previous generation of devices.
However, as the market matures, the technological advances in phones tend to plateau. This means that new devices end up not making any large improvements over older generation devices.
If your beloved device dies, instead of purchasing the latest model, consider buying a refurbished model of your old device. You will end up saving a lot of money and you will not need to learn a whole new device again!
Better for the Environment
It has become common practice to purchase a new mobile device every two (or even one) year. Whether you purchase a used or refurbished device, it is no doubt better for the environment than purchasing a brand new device. You will be giving an older device a new life, and preventing it from ending up in a landfill. Singapore is also one of the biggest contributors of e-waste in South-East Asia, with each person generating about 20kg of e-waste every year.
As an added bonus, we plant a tree for every device sold! That's just our way of helping the Earth, our home.
This eco-friendly decision, combined with the cost savings, will make purchasing a refurbished device even more attractive.
